Practical skills

I’m well-versed in the many aspects of sound.

  • Sound Recording: worked with many different setups of recorders (Roland, Zoom, SoundDevices, Tascam, etc.) and microphones (AKG, Sanken, Sennheiser, Neumann, Schoeps, etc.) in film sets and field recording or foley recording sessions.
  • Sound Editing: I’ve spent many, many hours in front of a computer screen cutting sound for video, film, web-content and I really enjoy designing SFX. I’ve experience editing music
  • Mixing: this is one of my favourite parts in the Sound Design process. I’ve always felt that it is much like fitting the last pieces of a puzzle. I really enjoy working with surround sound, and I can’t wait for the chance to do some Atmos mixing.
  • Synthesis: I mostly go for soft-synth options when I want to synthesise sound but I’ve also had some experience with analog synths like the Doepfer A-100 or the Roland V-Synth.
  • Live Sound Mixing: one of my passions has always been music and I’ve been front-of-house mixer for quite a few shows (usually pop music) and festivals.

Other than sound I have some interest in:

  • Programming:  I prefer using visual programming if, but I do have some understanding of the syntax and logic behind Python, C# and lately I’ve been learning C++.
  • Video Editing: if I have to some video editing tasks I use Premier and After Effects (for some slates and minor effects).
  • Design and Image Editing: for graphic design I use Illustrator and for image editing I use Photoshop.
  • Text and spreadsheet processing: I use either MS Office or OpenOffice.

Software Skills

These are some of my weapons of choice when sound editing/designing/mixing.

  • ProTools: my go to DAW since 2009.
  • LogicPro X: great for composing.
  • Reaper: my alternative to ProTools.
  • MaxMSP: my favourite visual programming software.
  • SoundParticles: the best piece of sound design software that has ever came out from Portugal!
  • Native Instruments Komplete: both for sampling and synthesis it’s an incredibly “complete” collection (pun intended!).
  • Waves Plug-Ins: a classic go to for many sound professionals around the world.
  • GRM Tools: really powerful set of tools with a very intuitive GUI.
  • Izotope RX: if RX can’t fix it, nothing can.
  • Soundminer: great audio library manager.

Tools that I use for game audio.

  • Wwise: great piece of middleware audio implementation tool.
  • Fmod: really intuitive and user friendly implementation.
  • Unity: if Wwise or Fmod are not an option the AudioMixer tool is still a very nice option although it takes some more time for scripting interesting implementation options.
  • Unreal Engine: the Audio System also allows for some easy implementation options, but like Unity some code is required for more options.

Soft Skills

From my personal and professional experience I was able to muster a solid set of soft skills.

  • Adaptability and problem-solving: I believe that there are always many ways to achieve a specific result. It may take more time or have more complex stages to it, but I try to look objectively to my goals and solve any challenges that I may face.
  • Creativity and attention to detail: there are so many nuances in Sound Design that I try to make my work sound always sound personal and original.
  • Cooperation and open to discussion: after having worked in many different projects with many different groups of people I’ve learned that dialogue and constructive criticism always lead to the work environments and the best decisions in creative processes.
  • Dependable and reliable: I live by the principle of never making anyone wait for me and to deliver the best possible result.
  • Public speaking and communication of ideas: never my strong-suit, but I’ve learned to adapt and ever since I started teaching I’ve been more self-aware and organised when trying to expose my ideas and concepts to others.
